Are Porcelain Veneers Right for Me?
As a minimally invasive treatment, a porcelain veneer can be a highly effective restoration for a wide range of patients. In general, those who can benefit from porcelain veneers have:
- Mild cosmetic flaws affecting their teeth
- No signs of gum disease, infections, pain, or other functional problems
- Severe discoloration too dark to correct with teeth whitening
- A minor misalignment in their tooth that may not require orthodontic treatment
Whether you’re an older patient wanting to correct years of wear and tear, or you’re in your twenties or thirties wishing to replicate the full dimensions of a healthy tooth, porcelain veneers can help. For those with several different aesthetic concerns preventing a renewed, youthful smile, a Smile Makeover can also be an ideal treatment. Dr. Nadine and our team offer personalized advice and guidance during your consultation.
How is Treatment with Porcelain Veneers Performed?
Porcelain veneers are placed in-office, typically without the need for sedation or anesthesia. During the treatment process, a small portion of your enamel is removed from the affected tooth in order to create room for the veneer. This helps achieve a natural, organic fit for your restoration. Impressions of your teeth are then taken and sent to an outside dental lab, where your veneer is custom-crafted out of high-quality dental porcelain. In the meantime, a temporary veneer is placed until your permanent restoration is ready for bonding.
During your second appointment (which often takes place one week later), your custom veneer will be fitted to ensure it exists comfortably and naturally within your smile. Once accustomed to the veneer, many patients even forget they have it! These restorations can last for years, and even decades, with good care.
